Chembur Resident avails Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) for High Myopia at AEHI

Priyanka Wankhede had always been an active person all through her school and college days. She had interests in various fields like playing basketball, hosting several college events, etc., for which she always preferred to use contact lenses over eyeglasses. After completing her graduation, she started working as a HR professional in a company located in Vashi.

Soon, she started experiencing blurry vision even with her contact lenses. So, she decided to consult best eye doctor nearby by her office in Vashi. She searched on the google and found that Advanced Eye Hospital & Institute (AEHI), near Vashi has rave reviews from happy patients. She immediately booked an appointment at AEHI.

On the appointment day, she underwent detailed eye check-up. Her eye power was -11.00 in right eye and -13.00 in the left eye. Her eye pressure was 18mm Hg in both the eyes which was normal as the normal eye pressure ranges between 10-20mm Hg. Priyanka expressed that she wants to get rid of the contact lenses.

Other tests were performed for her as part of pre lasik evaluation. It included Corneal topography to study the curvature and topography of the Cornea; Pachymetry to measure the thickness of Cornea; Orthoptic Work-up to check eye muscle balance; IOL Master to evaluate difference in length between the two eyes, if any, and Fundoscopy for retina evaluation.

Then, she was referred to Dr. Vandana Jain, a Cornea, LASIK and Cataract surgeon. Dr Jain evaluated her anterior segment which was found to be normal. She then evaluated her test results. Pachymetry revealed that Priyanka’s cornea was very thin. Thin cornea is a contraindication in cases like Priyanka where the eye power is high (-11D). Rest of her tests were normal. Luckily, her anterior chamber depth was more than 3mm which is a pre-requisite for another procedure called Implantable contact lenses (ICL). For high myopes who are not suitable for Lasik, ICL can be a great option.

So, she was recommended Implantable contact lenses aka Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICL). These specialised advanced type of lens that are made from a copolymer of collagen i.e. Collamer. As collagen is the naturally occurring substance present in the human eye, it makes the lens extremely biocompatible. Additionally, with ICL surgery corneal curvature is not modified at all and this in turn reduces reflections and glare from bright lights which is sometimes an issue after Lasik done in high powers. Also ICL procedure is a reversible procedure and ICL can be easily removed from the eye is ever required. ICL is implanted through a very small incision inside the eye and hence its effect on the corneal sensations and the curvature is negligible. This reduces the risk of dryness predisposition after the surgery.

ICL are very thin and invisible once the ICL is implanted in the eye. It is safe, effective and improves unaided vision in all the cases. However, it does require proper planning and customization. All those who were not suitable for Lasik, Epi Lasik/PRK and Femto Lasik have ICL as a wonderful option to consider.

Priyanka discussed the pros and cons of ICL and felt confident about the safety of the surgery. She scheduled the procedure and underwent ICL procedure sequentially in both eyes.

She got quick recovery from the procedure and thereafter, she returned got back to work within a few days and normal lifestyle by one month.

After one month of ICL surgery, her vision dramatically improved to 6/6 and her eye pressure was also normal. She no longer needed to wear the contact lenses.

Although, ICL are very good option to get freedom from glasses and contact lenses, one must undergo proper evaluation of their eyes to know if ICL is suitable for their eye in the long run.
